Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to play for either country at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue future success.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Manchester.
