A large-scale rescue and recovery effort is currently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two unlocated boats transporting relief goods journeying from Mexico to Cuba.
Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to find the missing boats, which were had on board at least 9 crew members, according to a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through multiple power outages across the country.
"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are outfitted with suitable safety systems and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.
The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.
"We are co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.
That boat, dubbed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the vessel in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, baby formula, cycles and food.
Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led efforts to ship essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50k surgeries called off in Cuba amid energy rationing.
Foreign policy measures have intensified over the past months, with comments from various representatives underscoring the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.
In response to recent comments, a prominent official from Cuba declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The maritime authorities stated it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to discover the vessels and secure the security of the crews.
At this time, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
