New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away after his victory in November.

"This decision rested on the security of my family and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, it will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he hails from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
