The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company with his partner, announced that he plans to personally create the controversial product as part of a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company

The recent announcement deepens the continuing disagreement between the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.

The co-founders maintain how Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem of Solidarity

Mr. Cohen revealed through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Previous Social Engagement and Recent Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which was first created in 2016 to support former political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen indicated how he will create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, after decades of involvement, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined after corporate moves to curb its social activism.

Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
