Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
