The bodies of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been found inside freezing appliances in an apartment in western Austria.

The deceased, a woman from Syria and her child, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were detected on the end of last week. The cooling units were placed behind a false wall in the dwelling, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

Two men, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in the month of June. The older man, a work associate of the Syrian woman, stated to law enforcement last week that there had been an incident—but disputed murder.

Informing the media earlier, a official for the legal authorities stated the brothers were being detained on "serious suspicion of intentional killing".

The names of those involved have been withheld by law enforcement, in accordance with local legislation.

Their going missing was first reported by the cousin of the mother, who is based in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Police said the woman's colleague informed them at the time she had taken an extended trip with her child to visit her parents in Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then found to have been used overseas on multiple occasions.

Yet when police entered the victim's residence, her mobile phone was discovered.

A witness also claimed hearing a disturbing sound in the dwelling, and cries of "mother" on the day the two were thought to have disappeared.

A wider criminal probe was launched, with authorities uncovering several texts transmitted via the victim's mobile—among them a notice of quitting to her workplace and texts to the 55-year-old suspect.

Officials confirmed a four-figure sum was also transferred to the suspect.

A senior police official told media representatives on Tuesday that a storage unit had been leased before the victims' disappearance and a cooling unit had been positioned inside.

The two suspects extracted the freezer from the facility on the day the mother and daughter vanished, Tersch stated. And a week later, they obtained an additional appliance.

Investigators state they consider this indicates the deaths were premeditated.

"How they died was not identifiable due to the condition of the bodies," the official stated.

Mayr—from the legal authorities—noted the precise timeline is yet to be determined, but the bodies were carefully placed and were not found during a earlier inspection.

Although the brothers were arrested in June, it was only on 12 November that the elder brother acknowledged an event and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any murderous intent, authorities stated.

In a related development, his younger brother confessed to a attempt to hide evidence but rejected awareness of a homicide.

The brothers are at this time in detention before court proceedings in prisons in two Austrian cities, situated at a distance.

In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and the top legal representative stated the "alleged double murder... represents the sudden and brutal end of a mother and child and uncovers a cruel system".

"Females of all ages are falling victim to homicide due to the sole reason that they are female," they went on to say.

"Murders of women are a strongly established and widespread concern that we must address decisively."
