Individuals from both sides of the partisan aisle and the Hollywood industry are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking deaths of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant amount.
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
This is a appalling and vile comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Some GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared others in his political party to defend the statements.
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the shooting of a different individual.
Providing a element of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
