New York state AG has introduced a recent reporting form asking locals to share visual evidence of immigration raids throughout the state. This step comes just a day after a high-profile ICE raid disrupted NYC's Chinatown, prompting widespread protests.
A US congressman announced during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were arrested and held for "nearly 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations erupted in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen is entitled to exist without intimidation," the AG wrote in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and documented ICE activity during the raid, I urge you to submit that footage with the authorities. We are dedicated to reviewing these accounts and investigating any violations of law."
The platform provides spaces to submit images and video footage of the raid, as well as a section to indicate location information. Before submitting, submitters must tick a option that states that "the attorney general may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a legal proceeding or public report."
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say featured over fifty government officers, occurred in a popular neighborhood of the city where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are regularly available widely – frequently to sightseers.
Recordings of the operation show several covered and weaponized federal agents restraining and arresting a person, and forcing aside witnesses. Throngs of New Yorkers followed the agents through the streets. An armored truck was noticed moving along the urban roads.
At a news conference featuring the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be detained for without cause." He clarified the individuals were released on the following day with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman said. "This is a armed campaign to incite tension. It is purely a pretext to generate turmoil for this administration to deploy the troops to halt conflict that they initiated."
Fury over the ICE raid quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates criticized the operation, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the current administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, instead of protection. It has to end," a contender declared.
New York City immigrant rights groups expressed outrage too.
"Immigration agents descended on Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, covered personnel and tactical gear to target street vendors working to survive. This action had no relation to public safety and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," stated the president of a advocacy group.
Agency rules bans the detention of US citizens and the organization has claimed it refrains from apprehend US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been taken illegally by immigration authorities since the beginning of the present government.
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in NY and nationwide lately.
A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations against ICE are commonplace including claims of aggression and cruel conditions.
Latest, a document submitted by civil rights groups claimed medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
