Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Detailing His 20 Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a personal account this autumn titled Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time served behind bars.

This news emerged just 11 days following the former president gained freedom while he contests his conviction related to illegal collaboration connected to efforts to secure election campaign funds from the regime of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Inner Thoughts

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he reflects in a preview, indicating the account is more about his reflections while in solitary confinement instead of extensive analysis on the strained and troubled jail system in France.

“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where one hears a lot to hear,” he states. “The racket persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, he was present remotely from inside the facility, depicting prison life as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this ordeal manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I didn’t expect at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it because it’s gruelling.”

Unprecedented Situation

Sarkozy, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president in the European Union and the first leader since WWII from France to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Reading Material

It is not certain whether he had time to review and analyze the volumes he took into prison: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the famous story, in which a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail but escapes to take revenge.

Prison Conditions

The former leader was placed in isolation to protect him in a cell roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet at the correctional facility in the city. Guards occupied a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed just yogurt while inside worried that prison cuisine could have been tampered with. Although he had access for self-catering but refused this, according to reports. Unclear remains if he will detail his dietary choices.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain daily while he was in prison, informed the court he would be safer released than inside. “He has faced threats against his life, listened to yells after dark plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody on 21 October following a Paris court sentenced him to a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges related to a plan to secure political donations for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and is contesting the ruling, and another court case set for the coming spring.
