The California governor, a well-known Democratic figure, has revealed that he plans to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 elections are over.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor stated when asked about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor ends in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he added.
The California governor has emerged as a notable opponent of the Trump administration, employing his digital presence and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand the party's House seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents.
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday interview on a major news network. Duffy announced a strategy to withhold federal funds from the state and suggested suspending the power to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," he stated, in the wake of a this week's deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that led to three deaths and injured individuals.
The governor's team noted that the U.S. government had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which allowed him to obtain a trucking license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had before indicated he was blocking $40m from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for commercial drivers.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp national statutes," the governor's team responded in a recent release responding to the funding warnings. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."
A recently conducted study found that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom must consider running for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an typical level of more than 40% to under 40%.
Earlier this year, the governor commented while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.
He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The thought that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
